In an institution, the big difference between a hearing aid that is used and one that stays in a drawer is a clear routine. Here is how to build one around rechargeable HearLink hearing aids.
A charging routine for the institution
According to the Philips instructions for use, the hearing aids are charged every night, and the charger is the right place to keep them when they are not in the ears. In an institution, this rule becomes a procedure:
- A fixed place for each resident's charger: dry, away from a sink and from heat, and not in the sun by a window.
- The charger is plugged in. According to Philips, make sure the charger is connected, or that the built-in battery of a portable charger is charged, when the hearing aid is in it.
- A light check in the morning. According to Philips, the light on the hearing aid is green when it is on. Fast, continuous orange flashes indicate a low battery. An orange flash while the hearing aid is in the charger indicates a fault, and then you contact us.
- After a power cut. According to Philips, if the charger was disconnected from the mains during charging, the hearing aids may switch off. If they do not switch on when taken out, switch them on with the button.

Right, left, and the resident's name
According to Philips, it is important to tell the right hearing aid from the left, because they may be programmed differently. A red mark indicates the right hearing aid, and a blue mark the left. Philips also warns not to let another person wear the hearing aids, because use by another person may damage their hearing. In an institution this means: each charger is labelled with the resident's name, and hearing aids are not swapped between residents even when they look identical.
Safety on the ward
- Small parts. According to Philips, keep small parts, such as hearing aids and domes, out of reach of anyone who might swallow them. If someone chokes on or swallows a part, seek urgent medical care immediately.
- Medical examinations. According to Philips, remove the hearing aids before an X-ray, CT, MRI, PET, electrical treatment or surgery.
- A dome that did not come out. According to Philips, when you remove a hearing aid, check that the dome is still on the speaker. If not, it may have stayed in the canal, and you contact a professional.
Staff guidance: what every staff member should know
- How to insert: according to Philips, place the hearing aid behind the ear, hold the bend of the speaker wire, and gently push the dome into the canal until the wire lies flat against the head.
- How to remove it and check that the dome came out.
- How to clean: according to Philips, with a soft, dry cloth, without water or liquids.
- When to replace a dome and filter. See care and cleaning.
- Who to report to when a hearing aid does not work.

One combined request to G-Sound
Instead of a separate request for each hearing aid, one combined list saves everyone time. Prepare a list: the resident's name, style (miniRITE R or miniBTE R), which ear, what the problem is and since when. Attach photos on WhatsApp. Service is by appointment, and the service options and cost are checked in advance for each case.
