First connection of Philips HearLink to a phone: iPhone, Android and iPad

The first connection of Philips HearLink 50 to a phone: what to prepare, what Philips states about connectivity, and how to go through the process on iPhone, Android and a tablet.

In short: according to Philips documents, HearLink 50 hearing aids support Bluetooth LE Audio, MFi (Apple's Made for iPhone programme) and ASHA (a protocol found on some Android phones), and work with the HearLink 2 app. You put the hearing aids into pairing mode according to the user guide for your model, and make the connection itself according to the phone's instructions. Not every phone supports every option, so it is worth checking before you start.

1. Before you start

A short preparation saves a lot of frustration:

  • Charge the hearing aids. A hearing aid with a low battery may not appear in the list. How to switch them on: Turning on, off and restarting.
  • Update the phone to the latest system version available for it.
  • Switch on Bluetooth on the phone.
  • The HearLink 2 app: install it according to the manufacturer's guide. Details on the page HearLink 2 app.
  • Know which style you have: HearLink 50 miniRITE R or HearLink 50 miniBTE R.
  • Keep the hearing aids close to the phone, and away from other Bluetooth devices that are connected at the moment.

2. What Philips states about connectivity

What Philips states for each style, and how to check whether your phone is suitable, is set out on the page Which phones are compatible with Philips HearLink.

3. iPhone: step by step

  1. Prepare the hearing aids according to the list in section 1.
  2. Put the hearing aids into pairing mode according to the instructions in the Philips user guide for your model.
  3. Search for the hearing aids on the phone. The phone's accessibility settings have an area for hearing devices; the exact path depends on the model and version, and it is worth following the manufacturer's guide.
  4. Select the hearing aids and confirm the connection request for each of them.
  5. Check that sound from the phone, for example a short video, reaches both sides.
  6. The HearLink 2 app: install and run it according to the manufacturer's guide.

4. Android: step by step

On Android, every phone maker has its own screens. According to Philips, HearLink 50 supports ASHA and Bluetooth LE Audio, but not every Android phone supports them, so it is worth checking the phone model in advance.

  1. Prepare the hearing aids according to the list in section 1.
  2. Put the hearing aids into pairing mode according to the instructions in the Philips user guide.
  3. Search for the hearing aids in the phone settings, according to the instructions of your phone's maker. Some phones have a separate menu for hearing devices.
  4. Confirm the connection for each of the hearing aids.
  5. Check the sound on both sides.
  6. The HearLink 2 app: install and run it according to the manufacturer's guide.

5. iPad and tablets

Tablet compatibility depends on the model and its system version, and we do not decide it in advance. Call us with the tablet model and we will check together against the information from Philips. If it can be connected, follow the same steps as on a phone.

6. TV and accessories

The TV does not connect directly like a phone. There is a dedicated accessory for this: the Philips HearLink TV Adapter. You connect it to the TV, and the TV sound goes straight to the hearing aids. Details on the page The Philips HearLink TV Adapter.

Another accessory on the HearLink 50 accessory list is the Philips HearLink AudioClip: a remote microphone that also allows calls without holding the phone, with iPhone and Android. It can be clipped to another person's clothing. The accessories are collected on the pages Accessories by model and Accessories and connectivity.

7. If the connection did not work

  • Check that the hearing aids are charged and switched on.
  • Switch Bluetooth off and on again on the phone, and try again from the pairing mode step.
  • Make sure the hearing aids are not already connected to another phone or tablet nearby.
  • Restart the phone.

If it still does not work, go through Philips HearLink not connecting to iPhone, Philips HearLink not connecting to Android, Bluetooth on Philips HearLink and Common Philips HearLink problems, or call us. Tell us the hearing aid model, the phone model, and the step where the process stopped. All the pages about the model are collected on the page Philips HearLink.
