Domes for Philips HearLink hearing aids: types, sizes and replacement

The dome is a small part, but it touches the ear all day. An old, loose or unsuitable dome can turn a good hearing aid into an uncomfortable one. On this page: which domes appear in Philips documents for HearLink 50, when to replace them, and how to do it at home.

In short: the Philips HearLink 50 miniRITE R user guide lists, among others, the OpenBass dome, the Bass dome with double vent and the Power dome, in sizes from 5 to 12 mm. The dome sits on a miniFit Detect speaker. The type and size are set at the fitting, and you always replace a dome with the same type and the same size. Domes can be ordered through G-Sound.

1. What the dome does

In a miniRITE R hearing aid, according to the Philips guide, sound reaches the ear through a miniFit Detect speaker. The dome is the soft cover fitted over the speaker. It holds the speaker in place and directs the sound into the ear canal. The type and size are chosen at the fitting, together with the hearing aid settings, so when you replace a dome you order exactly the same type and the same size.

2. Which domes appear in Philips documents

The user guide for HearLink 50 miniRITE R (models 9050, 7050, 5050 and 3050) has a list of regular ear parts. Among the domes listed there:

Name in the guideWhat the document says
OpenBass domeAppears in the list of regular ear parts. The 5 mm size exists only as OpenBass, and only with the miniFit Detect 60 speaker.
Bass dome, double ventA Bass dome with a double vent. Appears in the list.
Power domeAppears in the list.

Sizes: the guide lists sizes 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm. It does not say which size exists for each type, apart from the 5 mm size mentioned above. Speakers: according to the guide, the domes sit on miniFit Detect 60, 85 and 100 speakers. The documents also list the MicroShell Detect option. Which speaker and which ear part suit you is decided at the fitting.

Were you offered a dome that does not appear in your model's guide? Check with us before using it.

3. And what about miniBTE R?

In the HearLink 50 miniBTE R style, the connection to the ear is different. According to the Philips technical data, the hearing aid works with a hook or with a thin tube. Which ear parts suit the tube, and how to replace them, is in the manufacturer's instructions for your model. If you have a miniBTE R and need a replacement part, call us and we will check together exactly what fits.

4. When to replace a dome

There is no single number that suits everyone. How often depends on use, on the amount of earwax and on cleaning. Replace it according to the instructions in the manufacturer's guide, and also when you see one of these signs:

  • The dome has hardened, changed colour or cracked.
  • The dome does not stay firmly on the speaker, or comes off easily.
  • There is wax on it that does not come off with cleaning.
  • The sound is weak or muffled, and cleaning did not help.
  • The hearing aid starts to feel less comfortable in the ear.

If the sound is weak even with a new dome, the problem is probably somewhere else. It is worth going through Common Philips HearLink problems, Cleaning Philips HearLink and Philips HearLink care.

5. How to replace a dome at home, step by step

Follow the instructions in your model's guide. In general, the process looks like this:

  1. Prepare a place. Wash your hands and work over a table, with a towel or paper underneath, so a small part does not fall on the floor.
  2. Make sure you have the right dome. The same type and the same size as the current dome. If in doubt, stop and check before continuing.
  3. Hold the speaker itself. Grip the speaker and do not pull other parts of the hearing aid.
  4. Remove the old dome. Pull it gently off the speaker.
  5. Check the tip of the speaker. If you see wax, deal with it according to the cleaning instructions in the guide. Explanation on the page Cleaning Philips HearLink.
  6. Fit the new dome. Push it onto the speaker until it sits all the way.
  7. Check that it is firm. A gentle pull: the dome should stay in place. If it moves, fit it again.
  8. Put it in the ear and check. Make sure the sound is clear and the hearing aid sits comfortably.

6. A dome that stayed in the ear

Sometimes a dome that was not fitted all the way stays inside the ear when you take the hearing aid out. Do not put tools, cotton buds or tweezers into the ear to get it out; a doctor removes the dome. Afterwards, fit a new dome of the same type and size onto the speaker, all the way, and check with a gentle pull that it is firm. If there is pain, discharge or a sudden change in hearing, see a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about domes for Philips HearLink

Which domes appear in the Philips HearLink guide?

The HearLink 50 miniRITE R user guide lists, among others, the OpenBass dome, the Bass dome with double vent and the Power dome. The sizes listed in the guide are 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm, and the 5 mm size exists only as OpenBass, with the miniFit Detect 60 speaker.

How often is a dome replaced?

There is no single number that suits everyone. Replace it according to the instructions in the manufacturer's guide and according to the state of the dome: when it hardens, changes colour, cracks, or does not stay firmly on the speaker. If you are not sure, take a photo and send it to us on WhatsApp.

How do I know which dome size suits me?

The type and size are set at the fitting, according to the ear and the hearing aid settings. The Philips guide does not say which size exists for each type. When you order a replacement dome, order exactly the type and size already fitted for you, and do not change them yourself.

Can I switch to another dome type myself?

It is not recommended. The type and size were chosen at the fitting, together with the hearing aid settings, so a change is made only in coordination with us. If the current dome is not comfortable, tell us what bothers you and we will check together what can be done.

What do I do if the dome stayed in the ear?

Do not put tools, cotton buds or tweezers into the ear to get it out; a doctor removes the dome. Afterwards, fit a new dome of the same type and size onto the speaker, all the way. If there is pain, discharge or a sudden change in hearing, see a doctor.
