How to turn Philips HearLink on, off and restart it
With older hearing aids that use replaceable batteries, you open a small door and that is it. Rechargeable hearing aids work differently, and this is one of the most common questions after getting a new hearing aid. On this page: what Philips writes about HearLink 50, what to do when the hearing aid does not switch on, and how to restart it.
1. First of all: which style do you have
HearLink 50 has two rechargeable styles, and the difference between them matters here too:
| HearLink 50 miniRITE R | HearLink 50 miniBTE R | |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | Rechargeable lithium-ion, not removable | Rechargeable lithium-ion |
| Charging | In the HearLink 50 miniRITE R charger | Contact charging, in the HearLink 50 miniBTE R charger |
| Button | A button, used to switch on when the hearing aid does not switch on after the charger (according to the guide) | A double button (according to the technical data) |
The chargers differ between the styles. According to Philips, there is a desktop charger and a portable Charger Plus for each of the two HearLink 50 styles. If you are not sure which style you have, take a photo of the hearing aid and send it to us on WhatsApp.
2. Switching on
With a rechargeable hearing aid, the daily routine starts at the charger. Take the hearing aids out of the charger, put them in your ears, and check that there is sound on both sides. If a hearing aid did not switch on when you took it out of the charger, the Philips guide explains that you switch it on with the button.
Why does this happen? According to the guide, if the charger was disconnected from power or its battery ran out during charging, the hearing aids may switch off to save power. In other words, a hearing aid that does not switch on in the morning is not necessarily faulty. Check the charger first.
3. Switching off, on a rechargeable hearing aid too
miniRITE R has no battery to take out, so you do not switch it off by opening a door. The exact way to switch off your model is in the Philips user guide. As a routine, many users simply put the hearing aids back in the charger at the end of the day. According to Philips, the HearLink 50 desktop charger is also meant for overnight use, and charging starts automatically when you place the hearing aids in it. More about charging on the page Charging Philips HearLink.
On the go, the Philips Charger Plus is a portable charger with a built-in battery. Details on the page Philips Charger Plus.
4. Restarting: when something is not working as it should
At home, restarting means switching the hearing aid off and on again, according to the instructions in the guide. It is the first step when something feels unusual: odd sound, a slow response, or a phone connection that is not behaving as usual. The recommended order:
- Switch the hearing aid off and on, according to the instructions in the user guide.
- Check the charge. A hearing aid with a low battery can behave unexpectedly. Put it back in the charger, make sure the charger is plugged in, and try again.
- If the problem is the phone connection, switch Bluetooth off and on again on the phone, and if needed the phone itself. Explanation on the page First connection to a phone.
- Check the dome and the wax filter if the problem is weak or muffled sound. Explanation on the pages Domes and Cleaning Philips HearLink.
- Stop here. If you feel that a full reset or a settings change is needed, do not experiment. Call us.
5. The hearing aid does not switch on: what to check
| What happens | What to check |
|---|---|
| The hearing aids did not switch on after a night in the charger | Was the charger plugged in all night? According to the guide, if it was disconnected, the hearing aids may switch off. Switch them on with the button. |
| One hearing aid is on and the other is not | Put the hearing aid back in the charger and make sure it sits in place. Check that there is no dirt on the hearing aid or in the charger, according to the cleaning instructions. |
| On the go, with Charger Plus | Charger Plus runs on a built-in battery. If it is empty, the charger itself needs charging. |
