Oticon hearing aid not connecting to the phone: what to check

In short: When an Oticon hearing aid does not connect to the phone, Oticon recommends starting with simple steps: turn Bluetooth on the phone off and on, restart the hearing aids (they then stay in pairing mode for about three minutes), and close and reopen the Oticon Companion app. If that does not help, delete the old pairing and pair again.

A short guide based on Oticon's support pages: what to check when the phone connection does not work, and what helps prevent repeated drop-outs.

Before you start

  • Oticon refers you to its compatibility guide to check whether your phone works with your hearing aids.
  • According to Oticon, the Oticon Companion app is needed to pair an Android phone with the hearing aids. The app is available for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android.
  • The connection is between your hearing aid and your phone, so it helps to know the model name of the hearing aid and the model of the phone.

The first five steps

  1. Reconnect (Android): if the connection to one or both hearing aids dropped, try tapping the hearing aids' name in the phone's Bluetooth settings. On a phone with ASHA, Oticon asks you to connect through the app only.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on the phone off and on. According to Oticon, this forces the phone to reconnect.
  3. Restart the hearing aids. According to Oticon, after a restart they stay in pairing mode for about three minutes.
  4. Restart the Oticon Companion app: close it like any other app, and open it again.
  5. Re-pair in the app (Android): in Oticon Companion go to Hearing Aids, choose Pair new hearing aids, remove the current pairing and pair again.

On iPhone

According to Oticon's iPhone pairing guide: make sure Bluetooth is on, switch the hearing aids off and on again, and place them next to the phone. They should appear by name under Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices, in the list MFI HEARING DEVICES. Tap the name and confirm the pairing request; with two hearing aids you confirm two requests. According to Oticon, pairing can take up to a minute.

  • If there are connection problems, Oticon notes that deleting the old pairing on the iPhone and pairing again can help.
  • Call or media sound not reaching the hearing aids? According to Oticon, check Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices > Audio Routing, and make sure Control Nearby Devices is on.
  • Using several Apple devices? According to Oticon, turn on Audio Handoff, and make sure all the devices run the same iOS version and use the same Apple ID.

On Android

According to Oticon, newer hearing aids can stream directly over Bluetooth LE Audio only to phones that also support LE Audio. Many other Bluetooth hearing aids stream directly to phones that support ASHA; on a phone without ASHA, the ConnectClip accessory can be used. Not sure what your phone supports? Check it in Oticon's compatibility guide, or send us the phone model. Accessories: Oticon accessories.

  • According to Oticon, on a phone with ASHA you pair through the app, not through the Android Bluetooth menu.
  • Connection drops when the phone is in your pocket? Oticon recommends turning the phone so the charging port faces up, and keeping the phone close to the hearing aids.
  • Turning airplane mode on and off refreshes Bluetooth. Restarting the phone can also help.
  • An advanced step, according to Oticon: clear the cache of the Bluetooth app in the phone's app settings, then pair again in Oticon Companion. The menu path differs from phone to phone.

How to prevent repeated drop-outs

  • According to Oticon, pair the hearing aids with one mobile device at a time, a phone or a tablet. Several pairings can cause drop-outs.
  • Keep as few unneeded Bluetooth pairings on the phone as possible.
  • According to Oticon, make sure the phone's software is up to date.
