A hearing check day at the institution

We come to you, test the hearing of the residents who signed up, and agree with each one on the next steps — without residents having to leave the institution.

In short: a hearing check day is a session arranged in advance in which residents who signed up have a hearing test on site, one after another, in a relatively quiet room. The institution prepares a list of participants, a contact person and a room; we bring the equipment and carry out the tests. Each participant gets an explanation of what was found, and when follow-up is needed it is arranged separately.

Why hold tests inside the institution

For an older resident, going out for a test is no small matter: it needs an escort, transport, an appointment, and sometimes a whole day. Many residents simply put it off, even when staff and family have already noticed that they ask for things to be repeated, turn up the TV or withdraw from group activities. When the test comes to them, in a familiar place and at a convenient time, it is much easier for them to agree. We have been holding hearing check days at institutions for years, and it is one of the things that changes the picture most.

What the day looks like

  1. Reception. The institution's contact person arrives with the list of participants. We start with residents who find waiting hard or who have another activity later.
  2. A short conversation. Before the test we ask the resident how they hear day to day, in which situations it is hard for them, and whether they already have a hearing aid.
  3. The test. In a room that is as quiet as possible, with a simple explanation at each step. If the resident gets tired or does not feel comfortable, we stop.
  4. Explanation and summary. Each participant hears what was found and what the options are. What is agreed in advance with the institution and the resident is also passed on to the contact person or a family member.
  5. Follow-up when needed. Anyone who needs follow-up — a hearing aid fitting, a further test or a check with a doctor — gets an explanation of the next step, and the follow-up is arranged separately.

What the institution prepares

  • One contact person who knows the residents, coordinates sign-up and is available during the day.
  • A list of participants with a name, room number or another identifier that suits you, and a family member to contact where relevant.
  • A relatively quiet room — away from the kitchen, the lift and the TV room, with a table, a few chairs and a power socket.
  • A waiting area nearby, accessible for wheelchairs and walkers.
  • An escort from the staff for residents who find it hard to come by themselves or who need help understanding the explanation.
  • Consent. According to your procedures — the resident's consent, and where needed that of a family member or guardian.

What is important to know in advance

A hearing test at the institution gives a clear picture of the state of hearing and of the need for follow-up. It is not a substitute for a medical check, and anyone with pain, discharge, a blockage or a sharp change in hearing will be referred to a doctor. If a sudden hearing loss has appeared, see a doctor without delay.

Not every resident who is tested will need a hearing aid, and not everyone who needs one will want it right away. That is fine. Part of the value of the day is precisely in the conversation: a resident who understands what is happening to their hearing, and a family member who understands why their father does not answer the phone, are already a step forward.

And what happens afterwards

After the day we sum up with the contact person: who was tested, who needs follow-up and what was agreed with each one. For residents who need a hearing aid fitting, the follow-up can be at the institution or at the family home — we offer home hearing tests nationwide by appointment, and in most cases the demonstration and the fitting also take place in the resident's familiar surroundings. An institution that also has many residents with existing hearing aids can combine this in a combined check day.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about a hearing check day at an institution

What does the institution need to prepare for a hearing check day?

One contact person, a list of participants, a relatively quiet room with a table and a power socket, an accessible waiting area and an escort for residents who need one.

Does a hearing test at the institution replace a check with a doctor?

No. It gives a picture of the state of hearing and of the need for follow-up. Anyone with a medical complaint will be referred to a doctor, and with a sudden hearing loss, see a doctor without delay.

Who gets the test results?

The resident themselves. Who else gets an update — the contact person at the institution or a family member — is agreed in advance with the institution and the resident.

What happens with a resident who needs a hearing aid?

They get an explanation of the next step, and the follow-up is arranged separately, at the institution or at home, according to what suits them and the family.

Please do not send sensitive medical information in a message. We go over the relevant details on the phone.
