Home hearing test for seniors: a short guide for the family
For a parent who finds it hard to leave home, the test can come to them. Here is how to prepare, without pressure and without surprises.
How does it work?
- Booking: call or write on WhatsApp, and set a time in advance. A family member can arrange it on the parent's behalf, with their consent.
- A conversation: about the situations in which the parent finds it hard to hear, and what matters to them day to day.
- The test: a hearing test with an audiometer, at your home. The results are recorded in an audiogram.
- An explanation: what the results show, and answers to questions. If suitable, you look at the options together.

Who comes to the parent's home?
The test is carried out by a G-Sound technician with an audiometer and an audiogram. The G-Sound team brings 26 years of experience in the hearing field. They come with the equipment, explain to the parent what is going to happen, and give them the time they need.
What should you prepare at home?
- A short list of situations in which the parent finds it hard to hear: the TV, the phone, conversation at meals
- A previous hearing aid, if there is one, with its charger or batteries
- Results of a previous hearing test, if you kept them
- A list of questions the parent wants to ask, written in large print
- A son or daughter, if the parent wants them to be involved
It is worth choosing a room where you can sit at a table, and turning off the TV and radio during the appointment.
Who should be there?
The parent is at the centre. A family member can help remember what was said, ask questions the parent forgot and write down what was agreed. If a caregiver is with the parent day to day, it is worth involving them too. They are the ones who will see how the parent manages with the hearing aid at home. Being present and involved is done with the parent's consent.
Has the parent already done an online test?
If you did an online hearing test together, tell us what it showed. It is a starting point for the conversation, not a final answer.
What happens after the test?
After the explanation, you decide together whether and how to continue. If a hearing aid is relevant, the demonstration and fitting are done in the setting where the parent will actually use it, in front of their own TV and in conversation with the people they live with. We wrote about the practical considerations in the practical guide for families, about the stages of the test itself in What happens in a hearing test, and about what affects the cost in What a hearing aid cost includes.
Does the parent live in assisted living or a care home?
In institutions, the test is done at the institution itself. You can suggest that the institution arranges a hearing day, a talk or a staff briefing: Assisted living and care homes · Contact for institutions and communities.
When should you not wait for a home test?
Sudden hearing loss, ear pain or discharge from the ear are reasons to see a doctor without delay, rather than waiting for a hearing test. A hearing test for fitting a hearing aid is not a medical examination, and it does not replace medical advice.
