Hearing tests

How do you know it is time for a hearing test?

In short: Hearing loss often develops gradually, so you may not notice it at first. It becomes more common with age.

Signs from everyday life

The US National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) offers a short questionnaire. Among other things, it checks whether hearing difficulty causes you:

  • Difficulty hearing the TV or radio
  • Difficulty at parties and events
  • Frustration in conversation with family members
  • A feeling of “dropping out” of a group conversation
  • Avoiding get-togethers with groups of people

Hearing loss can also make it harder to hear the phone, the doorbell or a smoke alarm.

When to get tested

According to the NIDCD questionnaire, if you answered “yes” to two or more questions, it is worth considering a hearing test. The World Health Organization stresses that early identification of hearing loss is key.
