What happens in a hearing test? The stages and the audiogram

Many people put off the test because they do not know what to expect. Here is the process with us, step by step.

In short: a hearing test at G-Sound starts with a short conversation, continues with a test with an audiometer in which you hear tones and signal when you hear them, and gives you an audiogram: a chart showing the quietest sound you heard at each pitch. At the end the results are explained in plain language and, if suitable, you talk about a hearing aid. The test is done for fitting a hearing aid, and it is not a medical examination.

What are the stages of a hearing test?

  1. A conversation: in which situations you find it hard to hear, and what matters to you day to day.
  2. The test: a hearing test carried out by a G-Sound technician with an audiometer, and the results are recorded in an audiogram.
  3. An explanation: what the results show, in plain language, and answers to your questions.
  4. Next steps: if suitable, you look at hearing aids together and choose according to your needs and lifestyle.

What does the test itself look like?

In a pure-tone hearing test you hear tones at different pitches and volumes, in each ear separately, and you signal every time you hear a tone: you press a button, raise your hand or say “yes”. This is how ASHA and the NHS describe the test. The test does not hurt, and all you need to do is listen.

What is an audiogram?

An audiogram is a chart of the hearing test results. According to ASHA, the chart shows the quietest sound you hear at each frequency, that is, at each pitch:

  • Across: the pitch, in hertz (Hz). Usually low pitches are on the left and high pitches on the right.
  • Up and down: the loudness, in decibels (dB). Quiet sounds are at the top, loud sounds at the bottom.
  • The marks: each ear has its own mark. The lower the mark on the chart, the louder the sound had to be for you to hear it.

At the end of the test, you are shown what the chart shows and what it means for the situations you described. The audiogram is the basis for choosing a hearing aid and adjusting it. A hearing test for fitting a hearing aid is not a medical examination, and it does not replace medical advice.

Who carries out the test, and where?

The test is carried out by G-Sound technicians, with an audiometer and an audiogram. The G-Sound team brings 26 years of experience in the hearing field. The test is done at your place: at home, at work or anywhere else convenient for you, by appointment, nationwide. In institutions, the test is done at the institution itself. How to arrange it: Hearing tests in Israel. How to prepare your home: Hearing test at home. Arranging it for a parent? See Home hearing test for seniors.

How long does it take?

A hearing test and demonstration at home usually take about an hour to an hour and a half. We come with an audiometer, a computer, equipment for taking ear impressions and checking the ears, hearing aid software and accessories.

What about an online test?

An online test can give a first indication, but it does not replace a full test with an audiogram. More: Online hearing test.

What happens after the test?

If a hearing aid suits you, you talk about the options, with no obligation to decide on the same day. What affects the cost of a hearing aid: What a hearing aid cost includes. And how to choose: How to choose a hearing aid.

When should you see a doctor first?

Sudden hearing loss, ear pain or discharge from the ear are reasons to see a doctor without delay, rather than waiting for a hearing test.
