Foam Earplugs or Custom Earplugs: What Is the Difference?

In short: Foam earplugs are ready-made earplugs of a soft material that you squeeze before inserting, and that then expand inside the ear canal. They are available at once and handy for occasional use. A custom earplug is made from a flexible material to a measurement taken from your ear, and is meant for repeated use and for the main use you describe. Which suits you better depends on how long, where and how often you use an earplug. We come to you at home or at your workplace, take an ear measurement, and your earplugs are sent to you by mail.

Foam earplugs are the most common earplugs in the pharmacy and in the toolbox. Many people come to us after trying them and ask whether a made-to-measure earplug would suit them better.

When a foam earplug may be enough

  • When you use an earplug only now and then, for example on a flight or at an event.
  • When it sits well in your ear, does not move and does not bother you.
  • When you need a solution right away, today.

To get what a foam earplug can give, follow the manufacturer's instructions: how to insert it, how long to use it and when to replace it.

When to look into a made-to-measure earplug

  • Your foam earplugs fall out, move or do not go in properly.
  • They press or bother you when you wear them for hours.
  • You use an earplug every day: at work, for sleep or with music.
  • You need an earplug for a particular use, such as swimming or sleep.
  • You would rather have one earplug kept in a case than buy again and again.

What a custom fit does not promise

A made-to-measure earplug follows the shape of your ear, but that does not mean it will feel right from the very first moment. If something does not sit well, contact us. Repair and refit options are checked case by case. We do not publish technical values, and we do not promise a particular level of protection or what you will hear with the earplug in.

By use

When something in the ear does not feel right

An earplug of any type is not a medical treatment. If you have pain, discharge, irritation that does not go away or a sudden change in hearing, stop using the earplug and see a doctor.

How it works

  1. A conversation about what you need: where, how long each day, and what you need to hear while using it.
  2. An appointment is arranged in advance, and we come to you.
  3. Your ear is measured in the way that suits the ear and the intended use.
  4. The earplug is made to the measurement, from a flexible material. The production time is given after the measurement is taken.
  5. The earplug is sent to you.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How many times can a foam earplug be used?

It depends on the product. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the pack, and replace the earplug if it is dirty, torn or does not return to its shape.

My foam earplugs keep falling out. What can I do?

You can check the manufacturer's instructions on how to insert them, or try another size. If it keeps happening, it is worth looking into a made-to-measure earplug, made to the shape of your ear.

Is a foam earplug suitable for swimming?

Check the manufacturer's instructions to see whether the earplug is meant for water. For swimming there is also a dedicated custom earplug.

Which is better for sleep, foam or custom?

There is no single answer for everyone. If foam earplugs bother you at night or fall out, it is worth looking into a custom sleep earplug.

Can I order one custom earplug for several uses?
