Replacing domes and wax filters on Oticon hearing aids

In short: A short maintenance routine based on Oticon support pages: replace domes and Grip Tips rather than cleaning them, change the wax filter about once a month, and never put the hearing aids in water.

In short

According to Oticon, domes and Grip Tips are not cleaned but replaced, at least once a month or as your hearing care professional advises. The wax filter is replaced once a month (according to Oticon, on RITE and miniRITE hearing aids), when it is blocked or when the sound seems unusual, and always with the same type of filter that came with the hearing aid. Wax that blocks the sound outlet makes the sound weak or distorted.

Why it matters

According to Oticon, wax can block the sound openings, and then the sound becomes weak or distorted. Oticon notes that wax build-up is one of the main reasons for hearing aid repairs. General information for every brand: Domes, wax filters and small parts.

Where the wax filter is

  • On a behind-the-ear hearing aid, and on an in-the-ear hearing aid with an external speaker: the filter is in the speaker or in the earpiece.
  • On an in-the-ear hearing aid: the filter is in the body of the hearing aid.

Replacing a wax filter in three steps

According to Oticon, the replacement tool comes in a plastic holder and has two pins: an empty pin to take out the old filter, and a pin carrying a new filter.

  1. Take the tool out of the plastic holder.
  2. Push the empty pin into the old filter and pull it out.
  3. Insert the new filter with the other pin, remove the tool and throw it away.

Use only the same type of filter that came with the hearing aid. Not sure how to replace it? Oticon recommends asking your hearing care professional.

Replacing a dome or a Grip Tip

  1. Hold the speaker or the end of the thin tube firmly, and pull off the dome.
  2. Place the speaker or the end of the tube exactly in the centre of the new dome.
  3. Press firmly so that the dome is attached securely.

Daily cleaning: do and do not

  • Wipe the hearing aids and the domes every day with a dry cloth, with clean, dry hands.
  • Hold the hearing aid over a soft surface, so that a drop does not damage it.
  • Clean the microphone openings gently with the brush of the MultiTool, without pushing it in.
  • According to Oticon, never rinse the hearing aids or put them in water or any other liquid.
  • On a behind-the-ear hearing aid with a tube: if the tube turns yellow or stiff, it is replaced after checking with your hearing care professional.
