A custom earmould instead of a dome: the difference and when to look into it
In many hearing aids, the part that goes into the ear is a dome: a small, ready-made tip that comes in a few fixed sizes. For some users this works well. Others look for an earmould made to the shape of their own ear. We come to your home or workplace, take an impression, and the earmoulds are sent to you by post.
What a dome is
A dome is a ready-made part, in fixed sizes, that connects to the hearing aid and goes into the ear. It is not made from an impression of a particular ear.
What a custom earmould is
A custom earmould is made from an impression taken of the ear by casting. So its shape is suited to one person's ear.
The difference in short
| Dome | Custom earmould | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is made | In fixed sizes | From an impression of the ear |
| What is needed to get it | Choosing a size | Taking an impression by casting, and preparation |
| Fit to the hearing aid | According to the type of hearing aid | Checked case by case |
When people look into a custom earmould
These are common reasons for getting in touch. They do not necessarily mean a custom earmould is the solution:
- The dome moves or comes out of the ear.
- It is hard to find a size that feels right.
- They want a part made to the shape of the ear.
In some cases we check whether a custom earmould suits the hearing aid and the need. The answer is decided case by case, before starting.
What is worth knowing before deciding
- The fit to the hearing aid is not guaranteed in advance. It is checked before the impression is taken.
- The earmould does not replace a check of the hearing aid. It relates to the way the part sits in the ear, not to how the hearing aid works.
- If something does not sit well after the earmould arrives, options for adjustment and refitting are checked case by case.
How the impression is taken: it can be done with a physical impression of the ear (casting), or with a scanning process, depending on what suits the ear and the use. When possible, the impressions are kept to make reordering easier. About taking an impression · About reordering
